Overview
The K12 Paul Calabresi Career Development for Clinical & Translational Oncology Program is designed to provide training and clinical oncology research activities for scholars. The program requires a significant commitment of time and effort from the scholars.
Program Requirements
- Professional Effort: K12 Calabresi Scholars are expected to devote 75% of their full-time effort, for two years, to the training and clinical oncology research activities of the program.
- Mentorship: Scholars will select three program mentors: one primary mentor and two secondary mentors. Each mentoring team must include a practicing medical oncologist.
- Program Milestones: Within each Scholar's career development plan, he/she will be expected to complete three different but related milestones.
- Design and initiate a clinical cancer therapy trial to answer a biological hypothesis-based clinical research question.
- Complete at least two publishable research reports.
- Create a fully developed grant application and submit it to a funding agency.
Training
- In-Depth Clinical & Laboratory Training: Scholars will immerse in a longitudinal clinical and laboratory experience that will last for the remainder of the time the Scholar is in the program.
- The focus of the program is primarily on the development of a patient-oriented researcher.
- Scholars will be expected to be familiar with the conduct, quality control, and interpretation of assays pertinent to their clinical research protocol.
National Meeting
- K12 Scholars will be required to attend a national professional meeting each year.
Program Details
- The program is designed for M.D. and Ph.D. scholars.
- M.D. Scholars are encouraged to wait three months before beginning their clinical practice if joining the program.
- Salary supplementation may not be from federal funds unless specifically authorized by the federal program from which such funds are derived.
- The program will provide a foundation for scholars to complete the required milestones and develop a successful cancer research career.
