Resident Education
Resident education is a key aspect of the program, with:
Didactics
Formal resident didactics are held every Tuesday morning from 8:30-11:30 AM, featuring lectures, case-based learning, simulation, ultrasound, research, and statistical education.
Resident Call Schedule
Residents complete 8 total weeks of a night float rotation, with weekend call split into two shifts.
Rotations
Rotations include:
- PGY1: Benign GYN, GYN ONC, L&D Days, L&D Night Float, Postpartum, REI
- PGY2: Antepartum, Benign GYN, Family Planning, GYN ONC, L&D Days, L&D Nights
- PGY3: Antepartum, Benign GYN, Elective, GYN Float, GYN/ONC Night Float, GYN ONC, L&D
- PGY4: Benign GYN, Clinic Coverage, GYN ONC, L&D Days, L&D Night Float, Outpatient Surgery
Description of Rotations
Detailed descriptions of each rotation are provided, including:
- Antepartum: PGY-2, PGY-3 rotation, focusing on high-risk patients
- Coverage: PGY-4 rotation, floating between services based on volume and need
- Elective: PGY-3 rotation, allowing residents to create their own specialized rotation
- Family Planning: PGY-2 rotation, participating in a clinic specializing in complex contraceptive and miscarriage management
- Gynecology: PGY level 1-4, early operative exposure with graduated autonomy and case load
- GYN Float: PGY-3 rotation, assisting the gynecology team in the operating room and covering the VA clinic OR cases
- Labor & Delivery/Night Float (Obstetrics): PGY level 1-4 rotation, covering labor and delivery, postpartum, antepartum, and pediatric GYN consults
- Outpatient Clinic/Surgery: PGY-4 rotation, participating in open cases with private gynecologic oncologists and operating with MUSC faculty
- Postpartum: PGY-1 rotation, caring for patients as appropriate and participating in urogynecology clinic, ultrasound, labor & delivery, and continuity clinic
- REI: PGY-1 rotation, experiencing infertility counseling, workup, and management, including procedures such as hysterosalpingograms and intrauterine inseminations
Research
Resident research is an essential aspect of the program, with each resident required to complete a research project. Residents participate in lectures on topics such as study design, evaluation of literature, abstract design, and giving an oral presentation. The annual Resident Research Day allows residents to showcase their final product to faculty and guest judges.
