General Surgery Residency Program

The General Surgery Residency Training Program at the Medical University of South Carolina offers a comprehensive education in surgery.


Program Details

  • The program matches eight categorical residents each year.

  • The program provides a wide range of surgical training, including clinical and basic sciences, quality improvement, education, and patient safety.

Research Opportunities

  • There are many opportunities to engage in research on campus, including clinical and basic sciences, quality improvement, education, and patient safety.
  • Two dedicated research residents per class pursue 1-2 years of laboratory, clinical, or translational research.
  • Optional research years are available for residents, but there is no current research requirement.

    • PGY-1: $61,935
    • PGY-2: $64,151
    • PGY-3: $66,221
    • PGY-4: $69,299

    • PGY-6: $75,476
    • PGY-7: $78,521
    • PGY-8: $83,587
  • Eligible for a hospital Performance Bonus of up to an additional 4% of salary.
  • $100/month meal card allowance with additional call money.
  • USMLE Step 3 fee paid by the department.
  • Yearly SC medical license paid by the department.

Wellness and Cultural Dexterity Initiatives

  • MUSC has an active and dedicated Wellness Group with a faculty sponsor.
  • The group organizes culturally expanded social events for the entire resident complement.
  • The Cultural Dexterity Committee and the McClennan-Banks Resident Society work with under-represented in medicine residents to enhance heterogeneity in the hospital and engage with the Greater Charleston community.
  • Chicks with Knives is a group open to all surgery residents, focusing on the unique issues faced by women in surgery.
