The University of Essex offers a comprehensive basketball program designed to nurture talent and fuel passion for the sport while providing academic support for athletes.
Program Overview
As a future basketball player for the University of Essex, you'll join one of the top student-athlete pathways in the UK. The program offers personalized opportunities for growth, both personally and athletically, with a dedicated and inclusive community.
Teams and Competitions
The university has teams competing in BUCS inter-university competitions, as well as a 5v5 league and intramural competitions. The women's teams play in the BUCS Premier League, BUCS Tier 1, BUCS National Championships, and BUCS National Trophy. The men's teams play in the BUCS Premier League, Tier 1, and BUCS regional leagues, as well as the BUCS National Championships and BUCS National Trophy.
Essex Rebels Professional Teams
The Essex Rebels professional teams offer a premium platform for competition and game-day experiences, providing numerous playing opportunities each week. The women's team competes in the Super League Basketball Women's (SLBW), the highest level of women's basketball in the UK, while the men's Division 1 team competes in British Championship Basketball (BCB).
Facilities and Support
The program boasts outstanding facilities, including a state-of-the-art gym, personalized Strength & Conditioning sessions, and the Essex Sport Arena, home of the Essex Rebels professional basketball and volleyball teams. Additionally, the Performance Analysis and Coaching Room features a 100-inch touchscreen TV and sound system, allowing coaches to break down and highlight tactical improvements within the game.
Athlete Village
The university offers dedicated accommodation for sports scholars and student-athletes, located near the sports facilities and a short walk from the lecture theatre building.
Scholarship Opportunities
The university offers various scholarship opportunities, including:
- Tuition fee discounts up to 100%
- Cash bursaries
- Performance coaching and support services packages
- Free kit, use of facilities, and access to a range of support services worth up to È1,500 per year
The Performance Sport Scholarship program has four different tiers, with awards ranging from tuition fee discounts to cash bursaries and support services packages.
Application and Deadlines
Applications for basketball scholarships are open, with deadlines in May 2026. Sports bursaries are offered on a first-come, first-served basis and are linked to successful course applications at the University of Essex.
Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS)
The University of Essex is a TASS delivery site, working in partnership with Sport England and national governing bodies to develop the best young talent in the UK. The TASS Dual Career Accreditation Scheme recognizes the university's commitment to dual career support for talented athletes.

The program is led by experienced coaches, including Ashley Cookson, Head of Basketball Performance, and Joe Hart, Head Coach of the University of Essex Men's Basketball program.
