Program Overview


Overview of the BA (Hons) Curating Program

The BA (Hons) Curating program at the University of Essex is designed to provide students with the intellectual and practical skills necessary to succeed in the field of curating. The program combines classroom-based learning with hands-on experience in museums and galleries, giving students a comprehensive understanding of the history and theory of exhibition design, as well as the practical skills needed to work in the industry.


Program Structure

The program is structured over three years, with students taking a range of compulsory and optional modules. In the first year, students take modules such as "Writing and Researching Art History," "Collect, Curate, Display: A Short History of the Museum," and "Art and Ideas: I." In the second year, students take modules such as "Art and Ideas II: More Art, More Ideas - Critique and Historiography in the History of Art" and "Contemporary Art: 1945 until Now." In the final year, students take modules such as "Art, the Law and the Market" and "Capstone - Art History / Curating / Heritage."


Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the program, students must meet certain entry requirements. For UK students, these include:


  • A-levels: BBB - BBC or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels
  • BTEC: DDM - DMM or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of the equivalent of 2 full A-levels
  • Combined qualifications on the UCAS tariff: 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels or equivalent
  • IB: 30 - 29 points in the IB Diploma or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points to include a minimum of 2 Higher Level subjects
  • IB Career-related Programme: We consider combinations of IB Diploma Programme courses with BTECs or other qualifications
  • QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma: 120-112 UCAS tariff points depending on subject studied
  • T-levels: 120-112 UCAS tariff points

International and EU Entry Requirements

For international and EU students, the entry requirements include:


  • A wide range of qualifications from applicants studying in the EU and other countries
  • English language requirements: IELTS 6.0 overall, or specified score in another equivalent test

Fees and Funding

The fees for the program are:


  • Home/UK fee: 」9,790 per year
  • International fee: 」21,500 per year
  • Placement year: 20% of the standard tuition fee for that year
  • Study abroad: 15% of the standard tuition fee for that year
