Program Overview

Introduction to the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science Program

The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science is a three-year degree program, extendable to four years with an optional year in placement or abroad. This program is designed to provide students with the practical skills and knowledge needed to work in laboratories and hospitals across the NHS and private sector.

Overview of the Program

The program focuses on key areas such as the biology of disease, health and medicine, and specialization in fields like cancer, neurological disease, and virology. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a placement year or study abroad, which will enable them to put their learning into practice, expand their perspective, and build confidence in professional or international settings.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science program will be prepared for diverse careers in hospitals, clinics, healthcare companies, and more. Potential career paths include biomedical science, medicine, research, and education.

Employers of Graduates

Graduates from this program have progressed to roles in NHS hospitals, including Cambridge, Chelmsford, Colchester, and London, among others.

Professional Accreditation

The program is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).

Why Choose This Program?

The University of Essex is a top university in England for providing NHS placements on its applied biomedical course. It is also ranked 2nd in the UK for biosciences and 3rd in the UK for anatomy and physiology.

Meet the Researchers

The program is led by experienced researchers, including Professor Selwa Alsam and Dr. Efstathios (Stathis) Giotis, who have expertise in biomedical science and bioinformatics.
