University of Essex BA (Hons) Film and Drama

Overview

The BA (Hons) Film and Drama program is based in the Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies. Students will study themes in drama, such as gender, identity, tragedy, human rights, devising, and playwriting. They will also explore film modules, including directing, screenwriting, classic and contemporary texts, and many aspects of screen media.

Course Structure

The course is divided into three years, with various components and modules. In the first year, students will take compulsory modules, such as Approaches to Film and Media, Introduction to Theatre Studies, and The Humanities Graduate: Future Pathways. In the second and third years, students will have the opportunity to choose from a range of optional modules, including Tragedy and Theatre Writing, Performing Gender and Identity, and Directing Actors for Film.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the BA (Hons) Film and Drama program, students must meet the following entry requirements:

• A-levels: BBB - BBC or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels
• BTEC: DDM - DMM or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of the equivalent of 2 full A-levels
• IB: 30 - 29 points in the IB Diploma or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points to include a minimum of 2 Higher Level subjects
• QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma: 120-112 UCAS tariff points depending on subject studied
• T-levels: 120-112 UCAS tariff points

English Language Requirements

For applicants whose first language is not English, the English language requirements are:

• IELTS 6.0 overall, or specified score in another equivalent test that the university accepts

Fees and Funding

The tuition fees for the BA (Hons) Film and Drama program are:

Placement and Year Abroad

Students have the opportunity to undertake a placement year or study abroad for a year. The placement year allows students to gain relevant work experience within an external business or organization, while the year abroad provides the chance to experience other cultures and languages.
