Program Overview

MSc 5G and Emerging Communication Systems

The MSc 5G and Emerging Communication Systems course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the latest mobile technology and its applications. The course covers the fundamentals of signals, electronic, optical, and radio media, as well as state-of-the-art topics in modern digital transmission systems, wireless communication systems, computer security, and cryptography.

Overview

The course is based in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering and is available on a full-time and part-time basis. The duration of the course is one year for full-time students and two years for part-time students. The course starts in October and is located at the Colchester Campus.

Professional Accreditation

The course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Candidates must hold a CEng accredited BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree to comply with full CEng registration requirements.

Expert Staff

The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering has a long history of leading research and development in the field of electronics. The staff have contributed to major breakthroughs, including the invention of the world's first telephone-based system for deaf people to communicate with each other. The Communications and Networks (COMNET) research group specializes in 5G/6G and next-generation wireless communication systems.

Specialist Facilities

The school has extensive networked computer facilities and software aids, as well as a wide range of test and instrumentation equipment. There are six laboratories exclusively for computer science and electronic engineering students, with three open 24/7. Students have access to CAD tools and simulators for chip design and computer networks.

Course Structure

The course consists of several components, including:

  • MSc Project and Dissertation (60 credits)
  • Theory of Signals and Communication Systems (15 credits)
  • Digital Communications (15 credits)
  • Networking Principles (15 credits)
  • Mathematical Research Techniques Using Matlab (15 credits)
  • Programmable Networks and Services (15 credits)
  • Professional Practice and Research Methodology (15 credits)
  • Mobile Communications (15 credits)

Teaching

The course provides students with a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of the theory, methods, and applications of computer science. Core components are combined with optional modules to enable students to gain either in-depth specialization or broad understanding.

Assessment
