The PhD English Language Teaching is a postgraduate research course offered by the University of Essex. The course is based in the Department of Language and Linguistics and offers supervision in a wide range of areas, including vocabulary teaching, teaching reading and literacy development, writing pedagogy and academic writing, corpus-based pedagogy, teaching English to young learners, task-based language learning, language testing, classroom interaction, materials design and evaluation, teacher beliefs and teacher identity, and English for Academic Purposes, and computer-assisted language learning (CALL).

Entry Requirements

UK Entry Requirements

  • A good Masters degree or equivalent in a related subject is required.
  • A well-developed research proposal is also essential.
  • Applicants may be required to attend an interview or Skype interview for acceptance.
  • Acceptance is subject to research expertise in the department.

International & EU Entry Requirements

  • The University accepts a wide range of qualifications from applicants studying in the EU and other countries.
  • Applicants should contact the University with any questions about the qualifications accepted.
  • English language requirements: IELTS 7.0 (6.0 in writing, with a minimum of 5.5 in remaining components).

Structure

Course Structure

  • A research degree does not have a taught structure, giving students the chance to investigate their chosen topic in real depth and reach a profound understanding.
  • The course allows students to develop new high-level skills, enhance their professional development, and build new networks.
  • It can open doors to many careers.

Assessment

  • On the four-year route (the Integrated 'new route' PhD), the first year is a preparatory MRes year, where students take six taught modules and write an assessed MRes dissertation.
  • On the three-year supervised research route, students immediately begin their independent research under the guidance of their supervisor if they already have a solid knowledge of existing research in their field and a good understanding of research methods, plus a suitable research proposal.
  • Throughout the research studies, training needs are regularly assessed, and progress is formally checked by a supervisory panel every six months.
  • The thesis has a maximum length of 80,000 words.
