Program Overview


University of Essex BA History (Including Foundation Year)

The University of Essex offers a BA History (Including Foundation Year) program designed for students who do not meet the standard entry requirements for the three-year version of the course. This four-year program includes a Foundation Year, also known as Year Zero, which is delivered by the Essex Pathways Department.


Overview

The BA History (Including Foundation Year) program is suitable for students who want to improve their skills to support their academic performance. The program is open to UK and EU applicants and includes a Foundation Year followed by three years of study in the School of Philosophical, Historical, and Interdisciplinary Studies.


Structure

The program structure consists of a mixture of core/compulsory modules and optional modules chosen from lists. The Foundation Year includes modules such as:


  • Research and Academic Skills for University
  • Post-War Britain: Identity, Culture, Conflict, and Change
  • Analysing Film, Text, and Image
  • Theory of Knowledge

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching mainly takes the form of lectures and classes, with a typical timetable including a one-hour lecture and a one-hour class for each of the four modules every week. Assessment consists of essays, reports, in-class tests, book reviews, individual or group oral presentations, and small-scale research projects.


Fees and Funding

The Home/UK fee is 」5,760 per year, and the international fee is 」21,500 per year. There may be scholarships, bursaries, or discounts available to help with the cost of the course.


Entry Requirements

The standard offer is 72 UCAS tariff points from at least two full A-levels, or equivalent. Mature applicants and those with non-traditional academic backgrounds are also welcome to apply. International applicants should note that the Essex Pathways Department is unable to accept applications from international students.


English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the English language requirements, which include an IELTS score of 5.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.


Career Prospects

Graduates of the BA History program have gone on to pursue careers in a wide range of fields, including teaching, librarianship, museum and archive services, the Civil Service, local government, law enforcement, and charity administration. Others have proceeded to work in banking, industrial and retail management, media research, electronic publishing, marketing, IT, health service administration, counseling, and social work.
