MPhil Law
Overview
The MPhil Law is a postgraduate research course offered by the University of Essex. The course is based in the Essex Law School and offers supervision in two research clusters: human rights and law and technology. The research engages with debates about the meaning of justice in the UK and beyond. The staff have worked and continue to work with the United Nations, governments, human rights organisations, and corporations across the globe.
Entry Requirements
- UK entry requirements:
- A Masters degree in law and a first or 2:1 LLB honours degree, or equivalent.
- A well-developed research proposal is also essential.
- Normally, an interview/Skype interview is required for acceptance, and acceptance is subject to research expertise in the department.
- International & EU entry requirements:
- A wide range of qualifications from applicants studying in the EU and other countries are accepted.
- For specific requirements, it is recommended to contact the Graduate Admissions team.
English Language Requirements
- If English is not the first language, IELTS 6.5 overall, and 6.5 in writing, with a minimum of 5.5 in remaining components is required.
Structure
Course Structure
A research degree does not have a taught structure, giving students the chance to investigate their chosen topic in real depth and reach a profound understanding. In communicating that understanding, through a thesis or other means, students have a rare opportunity to generate knowledge.
Assessment
The MPhil is a structured two-year programme of advanced study and research.
Dissertation
The thesis should be no longer than 50,000 words. Twice a year, students will have a supervisory board meeting, which provides formal opportunities to discuss progress and agree immediate and future plans for their work.
