Overview of the BA (Hons) Business Management and Modern Languages Program

The BA (Hons) Business Management and Modern Languages program at the University of Essex is designed to provide students with a broad overview of business management while also allowing them to study two modern languages. This four-year full-time course is based at the Colchester Campus and is taught by the Essex Business School and the Department of Language and Linguistics.

Program Structure

• The first year focuses on the fundamentals of business management, introducing students to the main functional areas of business, including accounting and marketing.
• The second year allows students to take a deeper dive into business management theory and practice while also developing their skills as modern languages practitioners.
• The third year is spent abroad, studying at one of the university's exchange partners in various countries around the world, including the United States, Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, the Middle East, Hong Kong, and Japan.
• The final year provides students with the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice by completing an in-depth, independent research project or dissertation.

The staff specialize in areas including organizational diversity, business ethics, corporate governance, historical aspects of management, gender and LGBT inequality in the workplace, cultural production, corporate marketing and corporate communication, the role of bodies, knowledge and skills in consumption, technology and innovation, and leadership and human resource management.

The program is based at the university's Colchester Campus, which offers superb facilities, including modern lecture theatres, study pods, innovation booths for group working, networking opportunities with visiting businesses, a café, and adjacent foyer for fresh food and drink. The business school is located on the University's Knowledge Gateway, providing opportunities for networking and work experience with businesses on site.

Language Options

Students can study up to two languages with this course, and the language modules depend on their level when they arrive. It is possible to start at an initial level with no prior knowledge of a language (unless majoring in Portuguese, which requires an A-level pass or equivalent in Italian, Spanish, or Portuguese, or first-language level fluency in Italian, Romanian, or Spanish).

• GCSE: Mathematics C/4.
• Plus one of the level 3 qualifications below:
  • A-levels: BBB - BBC or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels.
  • BTEC: DDM - DMM or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of the equivalent of 2 full A-levels.
  • Combined qualifications on the UCAS tariff: 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels or equivalent.
  • IB: 30 - 29 points in the IB Diploma or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points to include a minimum of 2 Higher Level subjects.

English Language Requirements

• English language requirements for applicants whose first language is not English: IELTS 6.0 overall, or a specified score in another equivalent test that the university accepts.
