Program Overview
University of Essex BA (Hons) Social Change
The University of Essex offers a BA (Hons) Social Change program, designed for individuals looking to make a positive impact in the world. This flexible degree allows students to broaden their knowledge while acquiring the tools required to address today's pressing social problems.
Overview
The BA (Hons) Social Change course is based in the School of Philosophical, Historical, and Interdisciplinary Studies. It enables students to explore social change across multiple disciplinary perspectives, including sociology, philosophy, history, politics, human rights, literature, and more. The program covers key areas such as community engagement, sustainability, human rights, social justice, and individualism.
Study Abroad
The University of Essex provides the option of an additional year of study abroad. This allows students to experience other cultures and languages, broaden their degree socially and academically, and demonstrate to employers that they are mature, adaptable, and organized. Students who spend a full year abroad will only pay 15% of their usual tuition fee to Essex for that year and will not pay any tuition fees to their host university.
Placement Year
Alternatively, students can spend their third year on a placement year with an external organization. This provides an opportunity to learn about a particular sector, company, or job role, apply academic knowledge in a practical working environment, and receive inspiration for future career pathways.
Expert Staff
The program is taught by a team of internationally recognized writers and lecturers with expertise across the arts, humanities, and social sciences. The staff specialize in a wide range of topics, including literature, film, history of art, history, politics, and sociology.
Specialist Facilities
Students have access to extensive learning resources, including a comprehensive student support system, the Albert Sloman Library, and an exciting program of events.

The BA (Hons) Social Change program provides students with an all-round education, acquiring a diverse set of skills and a wide range of knowledge. This prepares students for a career in charity, fundraising, PR, media, law, government, and more.
