PhD Management Studies

Overview

The PhD Management Studies programme at the University of Essex offers students the opportunity to explore issues surrounding the contemporary workplace and its relation to wider society on a local and global level. Entry Requirements

• UK Entry Requirements: A good Masters degree or equivalent in a related subject is required. A well-developed research proposal is also essential. Applicants are normally required to attend an interview, and acceptance is subject to research expertise in the department.
• International & EU Entry Requirements: The university accepts a wide range of qualifications from applicants studying in the EU and other countries. International students should contact the university to inquire about the qualifications they accept.

English Language Requirements

If English is not the first language, applicants will need to have IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.

Structure

A research degree does not have a taught structure, allowing students to investigate their chosen topic in depth. The programme is designed to help students develop new high-level skills, enhance their professional development, and build new networks.

Components and Modules

• Components: Blocks of study that make up the course. Each component has a status and carries a certain number of credits towards the qualification.

Year 1

• COMPONENT 01: COMPULSORY - Essex Business School - Research (0 credits): This module reinforces research methods and skills, addressing philosophical issues underlying management and business research. It provides a comprehensive view of data collection and analysis methods.

Assessment

• Regular meetings with supervisors and an intensive study programme in the first year.
• Attendance at advanced research methods training and undertaking compulsory modules tailored to individual research needs.
• By the end of the first year, students should have a solid understanding of key debates in their field and defined their research questions.

Dissertation

Students can choose between a traditional thesis approach or a 'three paper' thesis, where they produce three research articles framed by an introduction and conclusion. Once the thesis is submitted, students will be asked to attend a Viva Voce examination.

Fees and Funding

• Home/UK Fee: Ł5,238 per year.
• International Fee: Ł20,625 per year.
• Fees will increase for each academic year of study.
