The MA (by Dissertation) Theatre Studies is a postgraduate research course offered by the University of Essex. The course is based in the Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies and is led by a vibrant group of theatre practitioners who work professionally in the theatre industry alongside their university teaching.

Entry Requirements

UK Entry Requirements

• A 2:1 or above (or international equivalent) in a relevant subject such as creative writing, theatre/drama studies, literature, film and media studies, modern languages, and art history.
• Normally, an interview/Skype interview is required for acceptance, and acceptance is subject to research expertise in the department.

International & EU Entry Requirements

• A wide range of qualifications from applicants studying in the EU and other countries are accepted.
• For specific requirements, it is recommended to contact the Graduate Admissions team.

English Language Requirements

• If English is not the first language, an IELTS 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in writing and a minimum score of 5.5 in all other components is required.

Structure

Course Structure

• A research degree does not have a taught structure, allowing students to investigate their chosen topic in depth.
• The course enables students to develop new high-level skills, enhance professional development, and build new networks.

Assessment

• The MA is a one-year Masters By Dissertation programme of advanced study and research.
• The thesis should be no longer than 30,000 words.
