Integrated Master in History: History

The Integrated Master in History: History is a four-year undergraduate course that allows students to explore challenging questions about the impact of political, social, and cultural change on individuals, social groups, and regions. This degree enables students to develop a critical voice and view history through the eyes of different people, telling hidden histories that might otherwise be forgotten.

Study Abroad

The university supports students in expanding their education through offering the opportunity to spend a year or a term studying abroad at one of their partner universities. Studying abroad allows students to experience other cultures and languages, broaden their degree socially and academically, and demonstrate to employers that they are mature, adaptable, and organized.

Placement Year

When students arrive at Essex, they can decide whether they would like to combine their course with a placement year. They will be responsible for finding their placement, but with support and guidance provided by both their department and the Employability and Careers Centre. If students complete a placement year, they will only pay 20% of their usual tuition fee to Essex for that year.

The teaching and research concentrate on the period from 1500 to the present and cover a wide geographical area that includes British and European history, as well as Latin America, the USA, China, Russia, and Africa.

Specialist Facilities

• The university has several Special Collections in history, including the Essex Society for Archaeology and History Library, the Harsnett Collection, the Hervey Benham Oral History Sound Archive, the Bensusan Collection, and the Colchester Medical Society Library.
• Access to the UK Data Archive, a national service provider digital resources for historians, which is particularly strong in nineteenth and twentieth-century economic and social history.
• Attend an exciting programme of events.
• Access to a variety of textbooks and journals in the Albert Sloman Library, which houses materials on Latin America, Russia, and the US that are of national significance.

A history degree opens the doors to many employment opportunities. In addition to the opportunity to learn about the past and come to a better understanding of the present, a course in history also provides students with important skills that will be of value after leaving university. Students learn to absorb, analyze, and assess a wide variety of information and viewpoints, to express their arguments in oral and written form, and to think and work both independently and in cooperation with others.

• A-levels: ABB - BBB or 128 - 120 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels.
• BTEC: DDM or 120 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of the equivalent of 2 full A-levels.
• Combined qualifications on the UCAS tariff: 128 - 120 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels or equivalent.
• IB: 32 - 30 points in the IB Diploma or 128 - 120 UCAS tariff points to include a minimum of 2 Higher Level subjects.
• IB Career-related Programme: The university considers combinations of IB Diploma Programme courses with BTECs or other qualifications.
• QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma: 128 - 120 UCAS tariff points, depending on the subject studied.
• T-levels: 128 - 120 UCAS tariff points. The university considers T-levels on a case-by-case basis, depending on the subject studied.

English Language Requirements

• English language requirements for applicants whose first language is not English: IELTS 6.0 overall, or a specified score in another equivalent test that the university accepts.
• English language shelf-life: Most English language qualifications have a validity period of 5 years.
• Pre-sessional English courses: If students do not meet the university's IELTS requirements, they may be able to complete a pre-sessional English pathway that enables them to start their course without retaking IELTS.
