PhD Linguistics

Overview

The PhD Linguistics course at the University of Essex is a four-year research degree designed to support students who do not have English as a first language. The course combines skills and enhanced subject-specific research proposals to give students the best underpinning for their doctoral studies. The core aim of the course is for students to refine English language for scholarly communication, enhance academic skills for postgraduate study, hone higher-level research skills, and master how to study and manage academic work in the UK.

Entry Requirements

UK Entry Requirements

  • A good Masters degree or equivalent in a related subject
  • A well-developed research proposal is also essential
  • May be required to attend an interview/Skype interview for acceptance
  • Acceptance is subject to research expertise in the department

International & EU Entry Requirements

  • A wide range of qualifications from applicants studying in the EU and other countries are accepted

English Language Requirements

  • IELTS with an overall score of 6.0 with minimum component scores of 5.5 or equivalent

Structure

Course Structure

Most taught courses combine compulsory and optional modules, giving students freedom to pursue their own interests. The research element of the degree doesn't have a taught structure, allowing students to investigate their chosen topic in depth.
