Overview

The BA Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies (including Foundation Year) is a four-year course that includes a Foundation Year, also known as Year Zero, which is delivered by the Essex Pathways Department. This course is suitable for students whose academic qualifications do not meet the entry requirements for the three-year version of the social sciences courses. The Foundation Year provides students with the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge to support their academic performance.

Course Structure

The course is divided into four years:

• Year 0: Foundation Year, which covers topics such as analyzing the social and political world, and people and society.
• Year 1: Students continue developing their academic skills alongside discovering different schools of psychoanalysis and exploring its applications.
• Year 2: Students build on their knowledge of psychodynamic concepts, exploring topics such as child, adolescent, and adult development, and critical overviews of Freudian and Jungian psychology.
• Year 3: Students delve deeper into advanced topics, including psychoanalytic theory, organizational dynamics, and psychosocial studies.

Teaching and Assessment

• Teaching takes place in relatively small seminars and forums, with a focus on group discussion.
• Students undertake supervised clinical practice, participate in skills-based workshops, and teach others through presentation of theoretical readings and clinical cases.
• Assessment is based on coursework marks, including essays and reflective reports, and exam marks.

Fees and Funding

• Home/UK fee: ｣5,760 per year (set by the UK Government for classroom-based Foundation Years only).
• International fee: ｣21,500 per year (the standard undergraduate degree fee for international students will apply in subsequent years).
• Fees will increase for each academic year of study.
• Scholarships, bursaries, or discounts may be available to help with the cost of the course.

Entry Requirements

• UK and EU applicants: 72 UCAS tariff points from at least two full A-levels, or equivalent.
• Mature applicants and non-traditional academic backgrounds: Applications are welcome, and will be considered individually.
• International applicants: Please note that this course is not open to international applicants.

English Language Requirements

• IELTS 5.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component, or specified score in another equivalent test.
