Program Overview


Introduction to Marquette University NROTC

Marquette University's Navy Reserve Officers' Training Corps (NROTC) program is a four-year curriculum that provides professional training to midshipmen. The program is designed to instill awareness of various warfare areas and provide midshipmen with the background necessary to make informed decisions regarding their career choice.


Midshipman Summer Training

A significant portion of midshipmen's professional training during their four-year curriculum is received during summer training. Navy summer training includes Career Orientation and Training for Midshipmen (CORTRAMID) for midshipmen third class and Atlantic/Pacific Training of Midshipmen (LANTRAMID/PACTRAMID) for midshipmen second and first class.


Typical Summer Training Assignments

  • NSI (New Student Orientation): All incoming new students to the NROTC program can expect to attend NSI during the summer prior to arriving at their respective NROTC units. NSI training is conducted at Naval Station Great Lakes.
  • CORTRAMID (Career Orientation and Training for Midshipmen): NROTC rising third class scholarship midshipmen are assigned to this training. Training consists of surface, submarine, aviation, and Marine Corps orientation.
  • Fleet Marine Force (FMF): Second class Marine Option midshipmen will conduct events to include, but not limited to: physical training, drill, field skills, small arms training and proficiency, exposure to various MOS', leadership billets, further exposure to the MAGTF, etc.
  • Nuclear Power: Midshipmen can be assigned to nuclear submarine or nuclear surface vessels.
  • Afloat Aviation Option: Selected midshipmen train aboard a carrier; training includes flight time on navy aircraft if feasible.
  • Ashore Aviation Option: Selected midshipmen train with a Navy aviation squadron, including flight time if feasible.
  • Foreign Exchange Training of Midshipmen (FOREXTRAMID) and Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Exchanges: Selected midshipmen train with navies of other countries.
  • Officer Candidate School (OCS): First class Marine Option midshipmen are required to participate in this six-week long training in Quantico, Virginia.

Program Details

  • NROTC Scholarship/College Program midshipmen authorized advance cruise pay.
  • Navy provides 80 percent advance payment to all midshipmen prior to commencement of their proposed training.
