Program Overview
Mechanical Engineering, PHD
Overview
The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers a doctoral program in Mechanical Engineering. The program requires a minimum of 45 credit hours of coursework beyond the baccalaureate degree and 12 credit hours of dissertation work.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Mechanical Engineering doctoral program is to immerse individuals in an active environment to cultivate broadly educated mechanical engineers who balance theory with practice for advancing knowledge, solving problems, and serving society.
Program Description
The doctoral program in Mechanical Engineering offers specializations in Energy Systems, Manufacturing and Materials Systems, and Mechanical Systems. The program requires students to complete a departmental written proficiency exam and a doctoral qualifying examination. Students must also complete a dissertation that represents an original research contribution and demonstrates high scholarly achievement and the ability to conduct independent research.
Career Skills Requirement for PhD Students
Marquette University requires all PhD students to complete three career skills requirements:
- Career Discernment: Students will be able to identify and prepare for career pathways that are consistent with their values.
- Communication: Students will be able to communicate their ideas and scholarship effectively to audiences beyond those in their discipline.
- Establishing Healthy Professional Communities: Students will understand the importance of community building and engagement in the creation and maintenance of professional environments.
Specializations
The Mechanical Engineering doctoral program offers specializations in:
- Energy Systems: Advanced study of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, and combustion, with applications to energy-conversion systems.
- Manufacturing and Materials Systems: Advanced study of evaluation of materials and their behavior, processes for changing material shape and properties, and analysis of the manufacturing process.
- Mechanical Systems: Advanced study of mechanical system design and analysis, and modeling, simulation, and control.
Course Requirements
Students must complete a minimum of 45 credit hours of coursework beyond the baccalaureate degree, including:
- 12 credit hours of an approved MEEN math course or equivalent
- At least 6 credit hours of an approved specialization course
- At least one half of the total coursework must be at the 6000 level
- At least one half of the total coursework must be taken from the Department of Mechanical Engineering
Doctoral Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of advanced concepts in engineering mathematics and two out of three areas of specializations offered in the department.
- Communicate ideas via peer-reviewed, published, and/or presented materials.
- Conduct original research in a chosen area of specialization.
