Program Overview


Introduction to the Nurse Anesthesia DNP Program

The Nurse Anesthesia DNP program at Marquette University is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality patient care in a variety of settings. As one of only three DNP nurse anesthesia programs in Wisconsin, Marquette University ensures that its students are well-prepared to meet the demands of this critical field.


Program Overview

The Post-BSN DNP program in Nurse Anesthesia is a full-time, three-year program that requires 91 credits. The tuition cost is $1,400 per credit, with other costs applicable. The program starts in the fall semester each year, and applicants must have a minimum of one year, preferably two years, of full-time work experience as a registered nurse in a critical care setting in the United States.


Admission Requirements

  • Official transcripts from all current and previous colleges or universities, with undergraduate courses in health assessment, nursing research, and statistics.
  • Three completed recommendation forms from previous or present employers and teachers familiar with graduate education in nursing.
  • Responses to specified essay questions.
  • International applicants must provide TOEFL scores or other acceptable proof of English proficiency.
  • A virtual synchronous personal interview with the Nurse Anesthesia Admissions Committee.
  • All applicants must be registered in the United States as a professional nurse, with a minimum cumulative BSN or MSN GPA and science GPA of 3.000 on a 4.000 scale.
  • Current certification in BCLS, ACLS, and PALS from the American Heart Association is required at admission and must be maintained during the program.

Curriculum

The program is divided into three years, with a combination of online, hybrid, and simulation lab courses. The curriculum includes:


Year One

  • Fall: Applied Statistics, Pharmacology for Advanced Nursing Practice, Advanced Health Assessment Across the Lifespan, Scientific Foundations of Nurse Anesthesia Practice, Simulation Lab, and Nurse Anesthesia Advanced Physiology.
  • Spring: Research & Evidence as a Foundation for Nursing, Pathophysiological Concepts for Advanced Nursing Practice, Nurse Anesthesia Neurobiology, Nurse Anesthesia Basic Principles, Simulation Lab, and Nurse Anesthesia Advanced Pharmacology.
  • Summer: Theoretical Foundations of Nursing, Ethics, Policy and Health Care Advocacy, Organizational and Systems Leadership, Nurse Anesthesia Advanced Principles I, Simulation Lab, and Nurse Anesthesia Clinical I.

Year Two

  • Fall: Quality and Patient Safety in Health Care, Healthcare Informatics, Technology and Prof Issues, Applied Epidemiology, Nurse Anesthesia Advanced Principles II, Simulation Lab, and Nurse Anesthesia Clinical II.
  • Spring: Translational Research, Nurse Anesthesia Residency I.
  • Summer: Professional Issues in Nurse Anesthesia DNP Practice, Nurse Anesthesia Residency II.

Year Three

  • Fall: DNP Project I, Nurse Anesthesia Residency III.
  • Spring: DNP Project II, Nurse Anesthesia Specialty Immersion I.
  • Summer: Nurse Anesthesia Specialty Immersion II.

The Marquette University College of Nursing, Nurse Anesthesia Educational Program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA), with the next review scheduled for Fall 2033.
