Associates in Commercial Real Estate
Program Overview
Introduction to the ACRE Program
The ACRE Program, which stands for Associates in Commercial Real Estate, is a 9-month professional training program designed to expand and support minority representation in the commercial real estate industry. Founded at Marquette University in 2004 by Dr. Mark Eppli, the program has a proven track record of graduating between 20 and 30 men and women of color each class, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to manage, invest in, and develop real estate assets.
Program Structure and Curriculum
The ACRE Program is highly structured, with a level of rigor equivalent to two graduate-level classes in a university setting. Key components of the program include:
- Weekly three-hour class periods
- Several assignments
- Three major exams
- A final course project that involves a development proposal for an actual site in the region, presented in a public setting and judged by seasoned real estate professionals
The curriculum is designed to maximize the practical application of real estate concepts, with a special focus on financial concepts, including financial analysis and value drivers for real estate as investments. Additionally, the program provides exposure to key elements of the development process, such as the major parties involved in developments, and concepts around urban planning and design forces that act on the commercial real estate space.
Guest Speakers and Site Tours
Guest speakers and site tours are integral components of the ACRE Program, offering deeper insights and networking opportunities for students. These elements enhance the learning experience, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the commercial real estate industry.
Administration and Partnerships
The ACRE Program is administered by LISC Milwaukee and led by a trio of educational partners, including:
- Marquette University
- The Milwaukee School of Engineering
- The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP)
Outcomes and Alumni Achievements
Graduates of the ACRE Program have achieved significant success, developing, managing, and investing in thousands of units of residential housing and hundreds of thousands of square feet of commercial space throughout southeast Wisconsin. Notably, past students have become leaders in the region, holding positions such as:
- Commissioner for the Milwaukee Department of City Development
- CEO and Executive Director of the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority
- Elected members of the Milwaukee Common Council
- Business Improvement District and non-profit executive directors
Admission and Program Frequency
Admission to the ACRE Program is highly competitive, and the program is offered every other year. The extensive application process includes a written application and essay, an entrance exam with quantitative and qualitative assessment methods, and in-person interviews with professionals and ACRE alumni.
