Program Overview
Master of Athletic Training (MATrg)
The Master of Athletic Training (MATrg) degree is a professional program for students interested in becoming athletic trainers. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).
Athletic Training
Athletic Trainers (ATs) are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians. The services provided by ATs comprise prevention, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.
Program Overview
The MATrg degree is designed to deliver high-quality education while fitting students' backgrounds and future aspirations. The program offers two flexible pathways to help students achieve their goals.
Program Options
- Option 1: 3-2 Accelerated Program
- Recommended for entering freshmen, student-athletes, and transfer students interested in earning an athletic training degree at NDSU.
- During years 1-3, students follow the NDSU Exercise Science guidelines and curriculum.
- Students apply to the MATrg program in the fall semester of the third year (typically Junior standing).
- Accepted students begin the MATrg program in July.
- During year 4, students complete both Exercise Science and MATrg courses. The Exercise Science degree is awarded in August.
- During year 5, students complete MATrg courses. Upon successful completion of all program and Graduate School requirements, the MATrg degree is awarded in May.
- Option 2: Two-Year Program
- Designed for students who have a Bachelor's degree in a related field.
- Students apply to the MATrg program through ATCAS and the NDSU Graduate School in the fall.
- Upon successful completion of all program and Graduate School requirements, the MATrg degree is awarded in May.
Accreditation
The MATrg is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Initial accreditation was granted in 2006, and the program was granted 10 years of continued accreditation following the site visit.
Program Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the Board of Certification (BOC), Inc. exam. The "ATC" credential is awarded upon successful completion of the BOC exam.
