Program Overview

Instructional Coaching Program

The Instructional Coaching Program is designed to provide instructors with teaching strategies, tips, and encouragement to continue growing in their role. The program offers a safe and confidential support system for instructors and departments.

Program Overview

The program is available to all instructors and departments on campus. It provides one-on-one consultations aimed at providing personalized guidance to support effective teaching. The program is free, and the Office of Teaching and Learning will not include names of faculty or programs using the coaching service in program evaluation reports.

Tracks Available

The program offers two tracks:

  • Individual Support: Instructional coaches meet with instructors to listen to their specific teaching and assessment needs. Coaches offer tips and suggestions for improved course performance and recommend professional development opportunities.
    • Department Direct Support: Instructional coaches partner with departments to determine instructional development needs. Coaches develop a professional development plan that addresses the department's specific needs, making resources and learning experiences available to the whole department.

Instructional Coaches

The program has several instructional coaches with expertise in various areas, including:

  • Dr. Stacy Duffield: Interactive instructional strategies, cooperative learning, formative and summative assessment design, and lesson/session design.
  • Dr. Jeff Boyer: Designing assignments, implementing formative and summative assessment techniques, aligning learning outcomes with assessment methods, and aligning course-level assessment approaches with program assessment.
  • Dr. Bill Martin: Cooperative and active learning strategies, peer review of teaching, professional development of future and current secondary mathematics teachers, and extensive administrative experience.

Working with an Instructional Coach

Instructors can prepare for their consultation by reflecting on specific teaching challenges and methods they want to improve. The process of working with an instructional coach involves:

  1. Requesting a consultation and being contacted by an instructional coach within 2 days to set up an initial consultation.
  2. The instructional coach listening to the instructor's goals and asking questions to gain more information.
  3. Additional meetings may be scheduled as needed.
