HVAC/R Technician Program

The HVAC/R Technician program is designed to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to start an entry-level career in the HVAC/R industry. This self-paced, 100% online course is designed to provide students with an understanding of key HVAC/R concepts and components, installation best practices, troubleshooting fundamentals, and much more.

Program Objectives

• Explain the concepts of heat transfer, Btu, temperature, heat content, sensible heat, latent heat, pressure, gas laws, and work, and describe how they apply to air conditioning and refrigeration systems
• Describe the four basic components that make up the vapor-compression refrigeration cycle
• Identify the four major system components and explain their functions in the refrigeration system
• Properly install an air-conditioning system and put it into operation
• Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems in an air-conditioning and heat pump systems

Program Details

• The course is designed for HVACR technicians with one-to-two years of industry experience
• A high school diploma or equivalent is required
• The course can be completed in 12 months or less
• The course will prepare students for the HVAC Excellence Core and Professional Technician certifications exams, the NATE Core and Specialty Test certification exams, and the EPA Section 608 certification exam

Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the employment of HVAC/R technicians is expected to grow 6% by 2032, which equates to 37,700 job openings on average, each year throughout this period. The BLS also states that the average salary for HVAC technicians is $57,300 per year with top earners making more than $84,250.

Instructor

The instructor for this course is Mike Baker, who has been an instructor since 2011. He was previously an HVAC Program Director at both Virginia College and Vista College. Baker was an HVAC technician for several decades and has experience hiring, training, and managing HVAC Technicians. He holds numerous HVAC Excellence certifications, several Green Mechanical Council certifications, an EPA 608 Universal certification, and Emerson Climate Technology certifications. He has served as both an HVAC Excellence Instructor and Exam Proctor.
