Program Overview

Certificate Requirements

The Certificate in Professional Ethics requires a total of 9 credits. The program consists of three main components: Ethical Theory and Application, Critical Reasoning, and Applied Ethics in the Profession.

Ethical Theory and Application

Students must select one course from the following options, each worth 3 credits:

• PHIL 111: Professional Responsibility and Ethics
• PHIL 210: Ethics
• PHIL 215: Contemporary Moral Issues

Critical Reasoning

Students must select one course from the following options, each worth 3 credits:

• PHIL 157: Critical Thinking and Informal Logic
• PHIL 257: Traditional Logic
• PHIL 370: Social and Political Philosophy

Applied Ethics in the Profession

Students must select one course from the following options, each worth 3 credits:

• PHIL 216: Business Ethics
• PHIL 225: Environmental Ethics
• PHIL 327: Ethics, Engineering, and Technology
• PHIL 475: Philosophy of Law With philosophy program approval, an alternative ethics course taught outside the philosophy program can be substituted. This may include courses from fields such as nursing or communications. A substitution form must be submitted to the Office of Registration, signed by the philosophy program coordinator, for approval.
