Course Overview

The Socio/Psycho Linguistics course modules consist of three 1-credit modules that can be taken separately. Each module includes a specific component of the formal study of language. Phonology/Phonetics, Morphology/Syntax, Semantics/Pragmatics, and Guiding Principles of Linguistics are prerequisites for this course.

Description

This course studies social and regional factors that underlie different varieties (dialects) of English. It examines the patterns that govern social and regional varieties of English, as well as the motivation behind attitudes about language variation. Students will recognize their role as language gatekeepers.

Meeting Pattern

Each module can be taken for a letter grade or as Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. The same textbook is used for all three modules and for the completion of the Sociolinguistics & Psycholinguistics course module series. Each module can be completed at the student's own pace, allowing for registration in multiple modules per semester, as long as each module is started and finished in order.
