Portfolio Development
Program Overview
Center for Regional Economic Enrichment
The Center for Regional Economic Enrichment offers a Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) program, which allows students to receive credit for knowledge and skills acquired outside the classroom.
Credit for Prior Learning
The Credit for Prior Learning program is designed for students who have gained relevant knowledge and skills through work experience, training, or other non-academic activities. The program involves the creation of a learning portfolio, which is evaluated by a faculty expert reviewer to determine if the student is eligible for college credit.
Portfolio Development
To participate in the Credit for Prior Learning program, students must follow these steps:
- Currently enrolled students must contact their Academic Advisor to ensure that the CPL will fulfill degree requirements.
- Students must view the Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) Orientation.
- Students must complete the Letter of Intent (LOI), which serves as the petition for prior learning credit and the agreement for participating in the CPL program.
- Students must submit a non-refundable evaluation fee, which is equal to one credit hour of credit for prior learning ($75 per credit hour for undergraduate students and $100 per credit hour for graduate students).
- The Program Coordinator will enroll the student in the required portfolio development course, which consists of seven progressive modules.
- After completing the modules, a faculty member with subject matter expertise will evaluate the portfolio to determine if the student is eligible for college credit.
- Credit may be awarded based on the faculty assessor's determination that the portfolio provides sufficient evidence that the knowledge and skills acquired outside the classroom are equivalent to what one would acquire in respective coursework.
- Students will be notified of the faculty evaluator's decision via email.
Evaluation Fee
The evaluation fee for the Credit for Prior Learning program is $75 per credit hour for undergraduate students and $100 per credit hour for graduate students. If the portfolio is judged to be worthy of college credit, the evaluation fee will be credited toward the student's remaining balance based on the credit hours granted.
Recommendation
It is strongly recommended that students seek Credit for Prior Learning no fewer than six months prior to their planned graduation date.
