Program Overview

Museum Studies Program

The Museum Studies program is an interdisciplinary graduate certificate program that provides students with a comprehensive understanding of museum studies.

Program Requirements

To complete the Museum Certificate, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Remain in good academic standing, maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0 during the entire course of their studies.
  • Meet with the Museum Studies program coordinator before the beginning of each semester to be cleared to register for their Museum Studies Certificate courses.
    • If a student fails to meet with the Museum Studies advisor for two consecutive semesters, the student will be automatically dropped from the Museum Studies Certificate Program.
  • Complete the two core courses (ANTH/ARTH 7661 and 7662) with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Successfully complete two internships (ANTH/ARTH 7669).
    • The student must be officially admitted to the Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate Program in Museum Studies and have successfully completed at least one core course before any internship will be approved.
  • Complete two elective courses approved by the program coordinator while maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Complete a graduate degree (MA, MS, MFA, or PhD) in a related discipline.

Obtaining the Graduate Certificate

To obtain the Graduate Certificate, students must follow these steps:

  • For students who entered the Museum Studies Certificate Program while in pursuit of an advanced degree (MA, MS, MFA, PhD), the Graduate Certificate will not be awarded until all requirements for the major degree have also been completed.
    • At that time, both the major degree and the graduate certificate will be conferred by the University of Memphis.
    • The student must file a Graduate Certificate Program Candidacy form at the same time they file the Master's or Doctoral Degree Candidacy form with the Graduate School.
  • For students who entered the Museum Studies Certificate Program already in possession of an advanced degree (MA, MS, MFA, PhD), the student must file a Graduate Certificate Program Candidacy form with the Graduate School once all the Museum Studies program requirements have been satisfied.
