Chemistry 3301: General Organic Chemistry Laboratory I
This course is required for Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, and Dietetics majors. It is also taken by students preparing for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and related health professions.
Co-requisite or Prerequisite
- Co-requisite: CHEM 3310
- Prerequisite: CHEM 1121
Course Description
The course emphasizes laboratory techniques as applied to synthesis and other reactions. It consists of three laboratory hours per week and is worth 1 credit hour.
Textbook and Other Materials
- Operational Organic Chemistry, 3rd or 4th Ed by Lehman
Course Objectives
Students will learn several operations for purifying organic compounds necessary for synthesis and understand the theory and consequences of the processes involved in each operation. They will also learn basic safety and first aid information, as well as standard methods of recording and reporting laboratory results.
Brief Course Outline
- Separation of mixtures
- Thin layer chromatography
- Alcohols, alkyl halides, and nucleophilic substitution
- Addition to alkenes
- Fractional distillation
- Oxidation
Grades
Grades depend on the student's performance in lab, as determined by lab reports and instructors, and on a midterm and final exam.
Policies
- Students must attend every lab section and adhere to laboratory safety practices.
- Required goggles, padlock, and additional protective clothing are the student's responsibility.
- Reasonable and appropriate accommodations will be made for students who present a memo from Student Disability Services.
