Program Overview
The African and African American Studies Program is a comprehensive course of study that includes three required core courses: AAAS 2100, 3100, and 4100. These core courses provide a general survey of African and African-American Studies, theoretical frameworks and methodologies for approaching the African and African American experience, and a capstone course focusing on a particular aspect of these experiences.
Program Requirements
In addition to the core courses, students choose twenty-one hours of elective credits from three areas of concentration:
- The Humanities
- This area of concentration explores the cultural, historical, and literary aspects of African and African American experiences.
- The Social and Behavioral Sciences
- This area of concentration examines the social, political, and economic factors that shape African and African American communities.
- The Arts
- This area of concentration focuses on the creative expression and cultural production of African and African American artists, writers, and musicians.
International Education Opportunities
The program also offers students the opportunity for international education through study abroad courses, providing a unique chance to engage with global perspectives and experiences.
