Veterans Vocational Rehabilitation & Education Program
Program Overview
Veterans Vocational Rehabilitation & Education Program
The Veterans Vocational Rehabilitation & Education Program provides educational and vocational counseling to eligible service members and veterans. The outcome of this counseling is assistance in the selection of an educational or vocational goal and/or assistance in the selection of training institutions where this goal may be pursued.
Eligibility Requirements
To receive an evaluation for VR&E services, a veteran must:
- have received or will receive a discharge that is other than dishonorable,
- have a service-connected disability rating of at least 10 percent, and
- submit a completed application for VR&E services.
Period of Eligibility
The basic period of eligibility in which VR&E services may be used is 12 years from the latter of the following:
- date of separation from active military service, or
- date the veteran was first notified by VA of a service-connected disability rating.
Procedure to Follow
Once a veteran has met with a VA counselor, the following procedure should be followed:
- The student should apply for a degree or certificate program with the school.
- The VA counselor will issue an Authorization Form each term.
- The authorization usually covers tuition, fees, and bookstore purchases.
- The student should contact the Veterans Benefits Coordinator (VBC) each term when they have registered for classes.
- Each term, the VBC will pull the student's schedule and certify the student for the number of credits they are registered for, and send the certification to the VA counselor.
- The university will then send a bill to the Vocational Rehabilitation office for each term the student is registered.
Counseling Services
Free counseling services are provided to eligible applicants. Counseling services assist in the selection of an educational or vocational goal and/or assistance in the selection of training institutions where this goal may be pursued.
