Program Overview

IMGD MFA Program

The Master of Fine Arts program in Interactive Media & Game Development (IMGD) is a terminal degree that refines artistic practice and innovates using new creative technologies. This art- and studio-based master's program gives students space, time, and resources to develop their creative practice and establish their creative voice.

Program Overview

The IMGD MFA program is a three-year degree that helps students become independent artists. Integrated into the degree are career-development opportunities, including training in teaching methods and networking with industry and academic leaders through a regular colloquium.

Career Opportunities

Professionals who hold an MFA in IMGD have a focus that's expanded above game design MFA concepts and are prepared for tenure-track academic roles, teaching positions, and careers in a wide variety of industries that rely upon professional design sensibilities. These industries include corporate and cultural organizations, experience-based product corporations, or full-body immersive game experiences.

Admissions Guidelines

MFA applicants are expected to have a portfolio of creative work for the admissions committee to assess. Applicants are also required to submit an artist/designer/writer statement and a personal statement. The artist/designer/writer statement should highlight the applicant's work, why they make it, and how they make it. The personal statement should focus on the applicant's past career, career goals, why they want to attend WPI, and any important parts of their personal history.

Program Benefits

WPI's new MFA in IMGD is focused on filling the industry need for professional design sensibilities. The program prepares students for myriad design opportunities and careers. WPI is an institutional partner with the Worcester Art Museum and the Worcester Center for Crafts and has extensive connections with established industry organizations and startups.

Global Industries and Economies

Global industries and economies rely on professional design sensibilities. WPI's MFA in IMGD is designed to prepare students for careers in these industries, providing them with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed.
