Program Overview

Human Research Protection Program

The Human Research Protection Program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is designed to ensure the protection of human subjects involved in research. The program is overseen by the Institutional Review Board (IRB), which reviews and approves research protocols to ensure compliance with federal regulations and institutional policies.

IRB Training

The IRB requires training for all Principal Investigators and Student Principal Investigators, as well as anyone interacting with research participants. The training program, known as CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative), provides education on the rules, regulations, and ethical principles governing research involving human subjects.

  • The CITI training program consists of a series of online modules and quizzes, taking approximately 4 hours to complete.
  • The training does not include HIPAA training, which is available through a separate program.
  • Principal Investigators and Student Principal Investigators are required to complete the CITI training every 3 years.

CITI Training Requirements

The following individuals are required to complete CITI training:

  • Principal Investigators
  • Student Principal Investigators
  • Anyone interacting with research participants, including those involved in consenting, recruiting, and data collection.

Completing CITI Training

To complete CITI training, individuals must:

  1. Visit the CITI training website
  2. Log in to their existing account or create a new one
  3. Select the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as their institution
  4. Choose the IRB Human Subjects Training course
  5. Complete the training modules and quizzes, achieving a score of at least 80%

Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Training

GCP training is required for all investigators and staff involved in federally-funded clinical trials. The training is available through CITI and covers the principles of good clinical practice in research.

Checking Training Status

Individuals can check their training status in CITI by:

  1. Logging into the CITI website
  2. Clicking on "Records" at the top of the page
  3. Viewing their completed training courses and expiration dates

FAQs

    • It depends on the specific modules completed and the similarity to UWM's requirements.
  • What is Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training?
    • GCP training is required for all investigators and staff involved in federally-funded clinical trials.
  • Do I have to do the training all at once?
    • No, progress is saved, and individuals can complete the training over several days.
