Program Overview

Brief Alcohol & Other Drug Screening & Intervention Programs

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Brief Alcohol & Other Drug Screening & Intervention Programs offer students the opportunity to explore their use of and experiences with alcohol and/or other drugs in a nonjudgmental and confidential setting. The goal is to help students make substance use decisions that result in fewer negative consequences.

Purpose

The programs are offered by the Student Health and Wellness Center, Office of Health Promotion & Advocacy. All sessions are held in person at Northwest Quadrant, Building D, 8th Floor.

Programs Offered

  • BASICS I: Brief Alcohol and other drug Screening & Intervention for College Students – Level 1 includes an initial 90-minute session plus a one-hour follow-up session with a trained facilitator. Students receive personalized feedback about their substance use and individual risk factors based on information shared through discussion, reflection, and survey questions. A range of options to reduce risks for harm is explored, and a plan can be made to align with the student's interests and choices.
  • BASICS II: Brief Alcohol and other drug Screening & Intervention for College Students – Level 2 includes two to three 75-minute individual sessions with the Campus Alcohol & Other Drug Coordinator. BASICS I is a prerequisite, and it is used as a foundation for further exploration of the student's use of and experiences with alcohol or other drugs within the context of personal goals and values. Students participate in experiential learning activities and debrief those experiences. Motivation for change is explored, and a plan for reducing risks is developed accordingly.

Eligibility

Current UW Milwaukee, UWM at Waukesha, and UWM at Washington County students are eligible to participate. For students who are 17 years old or younger, a signed parental consent form is required prior to participation.

Fees

For students mandated to participate, a non-refundable program fee will be placed on the student's PAWS account. BASICS I is $65.00, and BASICS II is $130.00. An exception is made for students assigned to BASICS by UWM through the medical or victim assistance policy. There is no fee for UWM students who participate voluntarily. Voluntary students typically do not receive verification or proof of completion of the program.
