Program Overview


Milwaukee VA Medical Center Orthopedic Residency Program in affiliation with UWM

Program Summary

The Milwaukee VA Medical Center Orthopedic Residency Program in affiliation with UWM is a 1-year paid residency that provides physical therapists with advanced orthopedic clinical skills and exposure to teaching. The program is 12 months long, full-time VA employment with benefits, and includes:


  • Treating patients with orthopedic problems for approximately 30 hours/week
  • Mentoring sessions from Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialists for two-four hours/week
  • Didactic coursework for two hours/week
  • Participation in monthly specialty clinics
  • Professional development of instructional skills through lecture and lab opportunities in the DPT program and the UWM Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning

The program starts in July of each year, with an application deadline in early January and decisions made mid-March. The Milwaukee VAMC Orthopedic Residency Program is an ABPTRFE developing program, with candidacy status anticipated by January 2022, signifying satisfactory progress toward accreditation. Residents who successfully complete an accredited program will be eligible to take the Orthopedic Certified Specialist (OCS) exam through the APTA.
