The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Helen Bader School of Social Welfare collaboratively offers a program designed to provide students with theoretical and practical exposure to evolving professional practice in the field of criminal justice, or social work with a focus on criminal justice.

Admission Requirements

- Admission: Students are admitted to both graduate programs separately, with admission requirements consistent with those specified by the UWM Graduate School, the MS in Criminal Justice & Criminology, and the MSW program in the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare.
Credits and Courses
Students accepted into this MS/MSW program complete the following courses:
- Criminological Perspectives: 3 credits
- Proseminar: Administration of Criminal Justice Systems: 3 credits
- Proseminar: Analysis of Criminal Justice Research: 3 credits
- Additional Courses: 12 credit hours of courses within the criminal justice & criminology program, and 12 credit hours of Social Work courses with the consent of the student's advisor.
- Social Work Foundation Curriculum:
- Social Systems and Social Work Practice: 3 credits
- Methods of Social Welfare Research: 3 credits
- Cultural Diversity and Social Work: 3 credits
- Individual Behavior and Social Welfare: 3 credits
- Social Work Methods I: Individuals and Families: 3 credits
- Social Work Methods II: Groups, Organizations and Communities: 2 credits
- Field Instruction I: 3 credits
- Social Welfare Policy Development and Implementation: 2 credits
- Social Work Advanced Practice Curriculum:
- Field Instruction II: 3 credits
- Field Instruction III: 4 credits
- Field Instruction IV: 4 credits
- Direct Social Work Practice I and Direct Social Work Practice II: (Option 1)
- Community Organization, Planning and Human Service Administration I and Human Services Administration II: (Option 2)
- Evaluation of Practice: 2 credits
- Evaluation of Programs: 2 credits
- Concentration:
- Social Issue and Policy Analysis: 2 credits
- Select one of the following depending on the area of concentration:
- Social Gerontology: 3 credits
- Adult Psychopathology: 3 credits
- Development of the Family Over the Life Span: 3 credits
- Electives: 6 credits of electives selected from among successfully completed CJC courses in consultation with a faculty advisor.
Total Credits for the Coordinated Degree
- The total credits for the coordinated MS/MSW degree program are 71 credits (without a BSW) or 49 credits (with a BSW).
- Degrees will be awarded simultaneously upon completion of all requirements.
Additional Requirements
- Time Limit: Students in the coordinated MS/MSW degree program must complete all degree requirements within seven years of the first enrollment semester as a degree student.
- Capstone Requirement: The capstone requirement is satisfied by completing the specified course within the program.
