Program Overview

Urban Planning, Undergraduate Certificate

The Department of Urban Planning offers undergraduates the opportunity to obtain a Certificate in Urban Planning. All undergraduate students are eligible. The intent of the program is to recognize those students who obtain a thorough introduction to urban planning through coursework. These courses provide students with an understanding of many of the most important problems facing urban society and help prepare students for a variety of careers and graduate study.

Overview

The certificate program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of urban planning principles and practices. The program is open to all undergraduate students, and its primary goal is to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in urban planning careers or pursue further education in the field.

Requirements

A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and a total of 18 credits from among designated courses are required.

• Designated Courses:
  • URBPLAN 140: Issues in Contemporary Urban Planning (3 credits)
  • URBPLAN 141: Urban Planning Solutions to Contemporary Urban Problems (3 credits)
  • Select one "Great Cities" course:
    • URBPLAN 315: Great Cities of the World: Their Growth and Guided Urbanization (3 credits)
    • URBPLAN 316: Planning for the Great Cities of America (3 credits)
  • Select one skills course:
    • URBPLAN 591: Introduction to Urban Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Planning (3 credits)
    • URBPLAN 651: Land Use Planning Practice (3 credits)
    • URBPLAN 655: Negotiation Theory and Practice for Urban Planners (3 credits)
• Electives:
  • Select 6 elective credits from any urban planning courses, including those listed above (6 credits)
• Total Credits: 18
