Applied Science – Justice Studies, Bachelor of Applied Science
The Applied Science – Justice Studies degree is designed to provide students with a solid theoretical foundation to address current issues in the criminal justice field. The skills and knowledge gained through this program enable students to succeed as criminal justice practitioners and leaders, enhancing their employment and career opportunities.
University Requirements
To receive a bachelor's degree at Northern Arizona University, students must complete at least 120 units of credit, including:
- All general studies requirements
- All requirements for the specific academic plan
- At least 30 units of upper-division courses
- At least 30 units of coursework taken through Northern Arizona University
- A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on all work attempted at Northern Arizona University
Overview
In addition to university requirements, the Applied Science – Justice Studies degree includes:
- Up to 64 units in an associate degree transfer block (up to 75 units for students with an AAS degree from an accredited Arizona community college)
- 18 units of BAS requirements
- 6 units of Justice Studies specialization requirements
- 21 units of Criminal Justice Administration coursework
- Elective courses to reach a total of at least 120 units

Additional Admission Requirements
Individual program admission requirements include:
- An associate degree, either completed or in progress, at a regionally accredited institution
- The associate degree must be completed prior to the awarding of the BAS degree
General Studies Requirement
Up to 9 units of major prefix courses may be used to satisfy General Studies requirements. Students who have completed the Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) or similar transfer curricula are considered to have satisfied NAU's General Studies and Foundation requirements.
Transfer Block
Students may transfer up to 64 units in an associate degree transfer block. If a student has been awarded an AAS degree from an accredited Arizona community college, NAU will accept up to 75 transfer units.
Major Requirements
The Applied Science Specialization requires 45 units distributed as follows:
- BAS Requirements: 18 units
- Communication Block: 3 units
- Public Administration and Management Block: 3 units
- Values, Ethics, and Policy Block: 3 units
- Technical, Quantitative, Qualitative, and Science Block: 3 units
- Electives: 6 units
- Justice Studies Specialization Requirements: 6 units
- Criminal Justice Administration Coursework: 21 units
BAS Requirements
The BAS requirements include:
- Communication Block: JUS 350W
- Public Administration and Management Block: PADM 329
- Values, Ethics, and Policy Block: PADM 411
- Technical, Quantitative, Qualitative, and Science Block: Select from PADM 356 or any course with an MAT or STA prefix (except MAT 101X, MAT 102X, MAT 108, or MAT 150)
- Electives: Select two from BBA 340, PADM 356 (if not used for the Technical block), or SOC 301
Justice Studies Specialization
Complete the following 6 units with a Grade of 'C' or better:
- JUS 330
- JUS 421C
Criminal Justice Administration Coursework
- JUS 410, JUS 411, JUS 436, JUS 450 (12 units)
- Select from the following (9 units): JUS 331, JUS 334, JUS 335, JUS 337, JUS 338, JUS 399, JUS 408, JUS 412, JUS 414, JUS 416
General Electives
Additional coursework is required to reach a total of 120 units. These courses can be taken from any academic area and used to pursue specific interests and goals.
Additional Information
This program is available as an Accelerated Undergraduate/Graduate Plan, allowing students to start a master's degree while completing their bachelor's degree. Some courses may have prerequisites, and students should consult with their advisor for more information.
