Program Overview

Introduction to the University of Rhode Island Shark Camp

The University of Rhode Island Shark Camp is a unique program designed to provide high school students with an experiential learning opportunity in the field of marine biology. The program was initiated by Professor Brad Wetherbee, who teaches in the Department of Biological Sciences, with the goal of exposing urban high school students to experiences that might generate interest in a career in the sciences.

Program Description

The Shark Camp is a week-long program that takes place during the summer. Participants engage in a variety of activities, including a visit to Mystic Aquarium and a tour of the Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences. The highlight of the program is trawling local waters for sharks and other marine life aboard the URI research vessel, Cap'n Bert. The program is free for participants and is designed to provide a holistic perspective on the world, from the molecular level to large populations and living systems.

Program Goals

The primary goal of the Shark Camp is to expose high school students to the breadth, scope, and excitement of scientific study, with a focus on marine biology. The program aims to provide participants with essential tools for addressing global challenges such as disease, food insecurity, loss of biodiversity, and climate change. By using sharks as a "bait" to attract students, the program hopes to introduce them to the various fields of study related to marine biology, including environmental science, animal veterinary science, and wildlife conservation.

Program Impact

The Shark Camp has had a significant impact on its participants, with many going on to pursue careers in the sciences. One alum, Mateo Munoz Gil, a chemical engineering major at URI, credits the program with helping him develop a love for the University and a curiosity for learning. The program has also been recognized nationally for its innovative approach to experiential learning.
