Introduction to the Graduate School of Oceanography

The Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) offers various programs and initiatives that bring current and relevant ocean science research to K-12 and public audiences.


Programs and Initiatives

GSO Ocean Classroom

The GSO Ocean Classroom is an education and outreach extension of the Graduate School of Oceanography that presents programs in schools, virtually, outdoors at field locations, and on the URI Narragansett Bay Campus. Ocean experts are involved in presenting these programs.


Program Offerings

  • Build, launch, track, and connect: A program involving miniboats.
  • Get to know the people and places of the URI Bay Campus: An opportunity to go behind the scenes.
  • Lesson plans with video resources for educators: Investigations with learning materials.
  • View archived conversations with experts about important ocean topics: Live conversations.
  • Family and community activities, open to the public: Community engagement.
  • Rhode Island educators become part of a scientific research cruise: R.I. Teachers At Sea.
  • Students can become Narragansett Bay field scientists: Narragansett Bay program.
  • Bring URI's outreach scientists into your classroom: Interpretive programs.

Research and Engagement

The Graduate School of Oceanography is involved in various research themes and has facilities such as the R/V Endeavor and the R/V Narragansett Dawn. The school also engages in public engagement through the GSO Public Engagement and the URI Coastal Institute, and is affiliated with the RI Sea Grant and the Inner Space Center.
