Program Overview
4 Year Career Prep Plan
The 4 Year Career Prep Plan is a comprehensive program designed to help students develop the skills and experience needed to succeed in their chosen career. The program is divided into four years, each with its own set of recommended activities and goals.
Year One
Recommended to begin as a Freshman, Year One focuses on introducing students to various aspects of career development. Activities include:
- Joining a student club or organization
- Seeking a part-time job on or off campus
- Volunteering for a local or on-campus organization
- Considering a minor in Leadership Studies
- Learning to write resumes and cover letters
- Completing the TypeFocus: Work module to discover more about oneself and one's personality
Year Two
Recommended to begin as a Sophomore, Year Two builds on the foundation established in Year One. Activities include:
- Attending Career Events to start conversations with employers about opportunities
- Considering Study Abroad opportunities to expand global awareness
- Seeking a part-time or full-time job on or off campus
- Creating a LinkedIn profile and connecting with classmates, professors, supervisors, and advisors
- Using the Writing Center to enhance written skills
- Writing for the University's newspaper
- Getting active with campus recreation
- Participating in multiple student activities on and off campus
- Volunteering to broaden horizons and experience other communities
Year Three
Year Three is focused on career readiness and includes activities such as:
- Enrolling in ITR 300 to learn more about career options and readiness
- Considering positions as a peer-leader to share expertise and leadership with undergraduate students
- Completing an internship to gain experience in the field
- Conducting informational interviews with industry professionals
- Using Spring Break for Alternative Spring Break
- Gaining skills in Microsoft Suite and/or Adobe Suite through classes and workshops
- Joining professional organizations in the desired career field at the student level
- Attending Career Events to have conversations with employers about opportunities
Year Four
Recommended to begin as a Senior, Year Four focuses on preparing students for the transition into the workforce. Activities include:
- Completing an internship to gain experience in the field
- Applying for job positions, especially those with employers coming to campus for On Campus Interviews
- Practicing interviewing skills through a mock interview with a Career Education Specialist
- Pursuing leadership or board member roles in student organizations, clubs, or activities
- Attending Career Events to start conversations with employers about opportunities
