Program Overview

Department of English and Creative Writing

The Department of English and Creative Writing offers an Accelerated Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts (A.B.M.) in English. This program allows students to obtain both a B.A. in English (120 credits) and an M.A. in English (30 credits) by taking 141 credits in 5 years.

Overview

The A.B.M. in English program enables students to double count a total of 9 credits toward the dual degrees. In the fall of their senior year, A.B.M. students take 3 credits of ENG 394 or ENG 395 Independent Study as an elective in the B.A. English major, with a member of the English Department faculty. This course trains students in graduate writing and research and counts toward the B.A. only.

Program Structure

  • A.B.M. students take 3 graduate courses in their senior year:
    • ENG 510/511 Introduction to Professional Study I and II
    • ENG 514 History of Critical Theories
    • One other graduate seminar (400-, 500-, or 600-level course)
  • These 3 courses count toward both the B.A. and the M.A. and may be substituted for courses listed as satisfying categories required for the undergraduate English B.A. major.
  • A.B.M. and M.A. students can take up to two (2) 400-level courses toward their M.A. program requirements, with the exception of courses with catalogue language indicating "not for graduate credit."

Core Courses

  • ENG 510: Introduction to Professional Study I (1.5 credits)
    • Orientation to the major discourses, critical frameworks, and databases constituting graduate researching language and literary studies, including computer-assisted research methodologies.
  • ENG 511: Introduction to Professional Study II (1.5 credits)
    • Orientation to the major discourses, critical frameworks, and databases constituting graduate researching language and literary studies, including computer-assisted research methodologies. Prerequisite: ENG 510
  • ENG 514: History of Critical Theories (3 credits)
    • Historical survey of critical theory from antiquity to the present.
  • ENG 595: Master's Project PRO (3 credits)
    • Student produces an M.A. portfolio in consultation with major professor and committee.

Fifth-Year Requirements

In their fifth year, students take the remaining 5 courses required for the M.A. and complete the 6-credit Non-Thesis Portfolio.
