Program Overview


Introduction to the Bridge to Ocean Exploration Experiential Learning Program

The Bridge to Ocean Exploration Experiential Learning Program is a core mission of the NOAA Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute (OECI), aiming to inspire the next generation of ocean explorers and foster awareness of Blue Economy career pathways. This program, based out of the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography, offers paid, part-time opportunities in ocean science, data science, and science communication to interested and eligible students.


Program Details

  • The program provides students with the opportunity to work on projects in various fields, including:
    • Computer science/programming
    • Ocean exploration data science (with 2-3 potential project tracks)
    • Ocean engineering and robotics (with 4 potential project tracks)
    • 3D models and virtual environments
    • Deep sea biology/genetics
    • Science communication and video production
  • Benefits of participating in the program include:
    • A paid, part-time opportunity with a stipend
    • Exposure to cutting-edge ocean science, engineering, and media production technologies and best practices within the OECI
    • Collaboration with OECI personnel
    • Field trips to tour facilities such as the University of Rhode Island and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Eligibility and Application

  • The program is open to students from the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI), with up to ten students recruited for participation each year.
  • Interested students must complete the OECI B2OE online application by the specified deadline.

  • The Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute is supported through funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
