Master of Arts (MA) in Translation and Bilingual Communication

Programme Information

The Master of Arts (MA) in Translation and Bilingual Communication is a postgraduate programme offered by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The programme aims to provide focused and vigorous training in Translation and Bilingual Communication, catering to the needs of students with different talents and abilities.


Objectives

The programme hopes to achieve the following objectives:


  • To offer more vigorous and concentrated training, enabling future trainees to acquire more insightful and professional skills in translation and interpreting
  • To provide intellectual stimulation to mid-career translators and those whose work requires bilingual/trilingual competence
  • To help takers of the Programme exercise their critical mind and appreciate better the relation between theory and practice
  • To provide a formal focus on new technology-based approaches to translation, including translation memory, machine translation, localization, and audiovisual translation
  • To make the programme available to applicants who have no knowledge of Chinese

Programme Structure

The programme consists of three streams: Interpreting, Practical, and Technology. Each stream requires 27 units, comprising 18 units of required courses and 9 units of elective courses.

Admission Requirements

Academic Qualification

Applicants should hold a bachelor's degree from a recognised university or an equivalent professional qualification.


Language Proficiency Requirement

Applicants for the Interpreting or Practical Stream should:


  1. Be able to communicate in English at an advanced level, and provide evidence of competence in English, such as:
  • Grade D or above in AS/AL Use of English
  • Level 4 or above in English Language (HKDSE)
  • A minimum TOEFL score of 79 (internet-based)
  • An overall band score of 6.5 or above in IELTS
  • CET-6 (College English Test Band 6) in mainland China: 500 or above
  1. Be able to communicate in Chinese (Putonghua or Cantonese) at an advanced level, and provide evidence of competence in Chinese, such as:
  • Grade D or above in AS Chinese Language and Culture (HKALE)
  • Level 4 or above in Chinese Language (HKDSE)
  • A BA degree with Chinese as the medium of instruction

Applicants for the Technology Stream should:


  1. Be able to communicate in English at an advanced level, and provide evidence of competence in English, such as:
  • Grade D or above in AS/AL Use of English
  • Level 4 or above in English Language (HKDSE)
  • A minimum TOEFL score of 79 (internet-based)
  • An overall band score of 6.5 or above in IELTS
  • CET-6 (College English Test Band 6) in mainland China: 500 or above
  1. Be able to communicate in a language besides English at an advanced level, and provide evidence of competence in that language, such as a BA degree with the language either as a major component or as the medium of instruction, or equivalent qualification

Others

The following documents must be submitted for assessment upon application:


  1. A copy of the original academic transcript of the first degree received by the applicant
  2. Two letters from referees of good standing in the community who are familiar with the applicant's academic performance and/or professional work
  3. Two 300-word self-statements, one in English and one in Chinese, outlining the applicant's academic interests and objectives (applicants for the Technology Stream are not required to provide the self-statement in Chinese)
