Master of Social Sciences (MSocSc) in Social Work

Programme Information

The Master of Social Sciences (MSocSc) in Social Work is a postgraduate programme offered by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The programme aims to develop competent professionals who are critical, reflective, and capable of generic social work practice, and to educate graduate students to achieve the academic and professional qualification that is considered eligible for registration as Registered Social Workers in Hong Kong.

Outcome Goals

Upon graduation, the graduates can:

• Evaluate the changing social needs and societal context and practice in line with the values and the ethical principles of social work
• Integrate theory and practice, and identify new theories and innovative practice
• Apply social work skills at various levels of intervention
• Critically evaluate professional activities and service programmes and advocate for appropriate welfare and service reforms
• Examine power, diversity, and social justice in social issues, social work practice, and social policy
• Appraise the value of life-long learning and professional development

Programme Structure

• Units Requirement: 37 units
  • Social Work Courses: 21 units
  • Elective Course: 3 units
  • Integrative Tutorials: 3 units
  • Fieldwork Placements: 10 units

Admission Requirements

Academic Qualification

Applicants should possess:

• A bachelor's degree from a recognised university, or
• A qualification deemed to be equivalent

Language Proficiency Requirement

Applicant should hold a bachelor's degree which is obtained from a recognised institution where English is the medium of instruction:

• An overall band score of 6.0 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
• A score of 74 (internet-based test) in TOEFL; or
• An equivalent score on a comparable test Note: Test result provided should be within two years from the date of issuance of the Admission Offer letter. TOEFL iBT Home Edition or IELTS Indicator test is not accepted.

Others

Priority will be given to applicants with RSW qualification (registered on the basis of a recognised social work diploma) or with social sciences background at undergraduate level.

Tuition Fee

• Full-time: HK$349,470/programme
• Part-time: HK$330,330/programme (including the fee for 2 fieldwork placements)
