Program Overview
Introduction to the Cantonese Peer Tutoring Programme
The Cantonese Peer Tutoring Programme is a collaborative initiative between the Language Centre and the Mainland Student Services Unit, with the support of the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Associations. This programme offers a diverse range of Cantonese learning and exchange activities, led by local student tutors who guide mainland students in engaging and interactive sessions.
Programme Features
- Diverse Activities Beyond the Classroom
All tutoring sessions are conducted in individual or small group settings, led by peer tutors who engage non-Cantonese speaking students in various exchange activities, such as lunch or afternoon tea gatherings, campus tours, book clubs, and explorations of Hong Kong streets and transportation. The goal is to learn Cantonese through practical, real-life experiences. - Professional Tutors and Peer Learning
Tutors are selected from students who are fluent in Cantonese and undergo training to provide high-quality guidance. They help learners overcome difficulties and communicate effectively in daily life. - Flexible Tutoring Arrangements
Tutoring sessions are held once or twice a month, with each session lasting one hour. The schedule is flexible and arranged between the tutor and the student. Tutors set learning objectives for each session and require students to complete simple post-session assessments, making learning enjoyable and interactive.
Target Participants
The programme is primarily designed for non-Cantonese speaking students, especially new entrants.
Programme Duration
The programme is divided into two phases:
- First Phase: Cantonese Foundations (September)
- Second Phase: Beyond the Classroom (October to December in the first semester and February to June in the second semester)
Admission Details
The Language Centre and the Mainland Student Services Unit recruit students for the programme before the start of the academic year (August).
Programme Objectives
The Cantonese Peer Tutoring Programme aims not only to assist mainland students in learning Cantonese but also to facilitate their integration into university life and Hong Kong society through friendship and shared learning experiences.
