Program Overview
Master's Program in Economics
The Master's program in Economics at Bielefeld University is a 120-credit program that deepens the competencies and knowledge acquired in the Bachelor's program and serves as a content-related focus. The goal of the university's economic education is to impart both subject-specific competencies in the sense of comprehensive, subject-specific knowledge and methodological competencies, i.e., the mastery of procedures, techniques, and models for solving a wide range of economic problems.
Program Objectives
The program aims to provide students with a general professional qualification for various economic fields of activity - both in the academic and organizational environment. By choosing one of the seven possible profiles, students can achieve an individual focus in their studies.
Profiles
The following profiles are available:
- Accounting, Taxes, Finance (ATF): This profile deals with internal and external corporate accounting, financial decisions within companies, and the tax implications of business actions.
- Management, Innovation, Marketing (MIM): This profile focuses on central issues of management theory, including market analysis, innovation processes, and product-market strategies.
- Financial Markets (FM): This profile examines financing forms and functional mechanisms on financial markets from both micro- and macroeconomic perspectives.
- Economics (ECO): In this profile, students acquire the skills to empirically and theoretically investigate economic issues, using advanced methods of econometrics and statistics.
- Data Science (DS): This profile provides students with the opportunity to integrate events from the field of Data Science into their studies, focusing on decision and operation technologies.
- Management Science (MS): This profile combines an in-depth study of quantitative economic methods with a content-related focus on selected areas of business administration and microeconomics.
- International Management and Economics (IMEco): This profile is designed for students participating in an exchange program with one of the faculty's partner institutions.
Curriculum
The curriculum includes compulsory modules, a free module choice, and an individual supplementary area. Students who do not choose one of the profiles follow the curriculum of the free module choice, selecting four modules from the range of subject modules in addition to the compulsory modules and the individual supplementary area.
Admission Requirements
Admission to the program requires participation in an application procedure to determine suitability and access. The procedure checks for a qualified first university degree, which is verified through the diploma and accompanying documents. Additional admission requirements and the submission of further documents may apply, as outlined in the subject-specific regulations of the program.
Application Procedure
The application procedure takes place via the university's online application portal. The start of studies is possible in both the winter and summer semesters. Online applications are typically possible from June 1st/December 1st and are usually accepted until July 15th/January 15th. The Student Secretariat provides information on current application deadlines.
Promotion (Ph.D.)
For students aiming for a scientific career or further qualification, a Ph.D. (Promotion) is a viable option. This involves independent scientific research (dissertation) and a colloquium. The Faculty of Economics offers various opportunities for a Ph.D., including a structured Ph.D. program in Economics and Management.
