Program Overview

Health and Safety Training Program

The Learning and Development team facilitates a number of courses specifically relating to health and safety topics.

First Aid Training

Training of Workplace First Aiders at the University of Canterbury is carried out by St John, who are accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) to assess first aid Unit Standards. The number of trained Workplace First Aiders required depends on the number of staff or students present in any particular situation, along with the types of hazards present in the environment.

  • Department Safety Officers (DSOs) should carry out an annual First Aid Needs Assessment to provide guidance on how many staff should be trained First Aiders.
  • An application to attend off-site first aid training is subject to approval based on the outcome of the First Aid Needs Assessment.
  • If a participant is unable to attend, they must withdraw at least 3 working days prior to the program commencing to avoid a cancellation fee.

First Aid Training Approval and Cancellations

A cancellation fee will be charged if a participant fails to withdraw from the course or does not attend on the day, unless extenuating circumstances are advised to Health & Safety. The fee is based on an equitable apportionment of the total fee cost being charged to the University for the running of the session.

Workplace First Aid Staff Training (Department funded)

If a staff member is not able to attend an approved training, there is no planned training, or if the first aid needs requirement is not workplace, they can attend off-site training funded by their department.

  • To enrol in first aid training (department funded), staff must obtain approval from the appropriate delegated authority and arrange a purchase order number through their usual work area process.
  • Staff must then book directly with St John, ensuring they check the details are correct before confirming their booking.

First Aid Training for Students

Students attending a course to complete degree requirements must ensure that the course is suitable and meets the requirements of their degree. The University of Canterbury Health and Safety does not fund payments for students attending First Aid courses.

Health and Safety Representative Training

Once elected a Health and Safety Representative, staff must enrol in HSR training by contacting the Health and Safety team.

Assura Training

Training documents and videos for the Assura H&S Reporting System are available for staff. If further assistance is required, staff can contact the Health and Safety team to discuss their needs and tailor training to suit.

SafetyHub - Safety Training Videos

A library of over 100 safety training videos is available, covering various health and safety topics.
