Introduction to the Graduate Diploma in Science

The Graduate Diploma in Science is a qualification that offers individuals who hold a bachelor's degree in an unrelated area the opportunity to study science in-depth. This diploma is designed to provide a pathway for graduates seeking to qualify for entry to postgraduate qualifications in science, change their career direction, or extend and upgrade their existing qualifications.

Entry Requirements

Entry to the Graduate Diploma in Science requires a bachelor's degree, which does not need to be in the same area of study. If the qualification was gained overseas, it will need to be assessed to ensure it is of an equivalent standard. Acceptance will depend on the standard and relevance of previous studies. Additionally, if English is not the first language, applicants are required to meet the University of Canterbury's postgraduate language requirements.

Degree Structure

The Graduate Diploma in Science is a 1-year full-time or up to 5-year part-time study program. Students can begin their studies in February or, for some subjects, in July. The diploma requires passing at least 120 points from Science subjects, with 90 points at the 300-level, including 60 points in a single subject.

• 2025 SSL: $9.72 per point ($1,166.40 per 120 points)
